What is Typhoid?

Typhoid fever is a serious, potentially life threatening infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi.

This disease is typically transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water. After ingestion, Salmonella Typhi bacteria multiply and enter the bloodstream, leading to the spread of the infection.

How Typhoid is Contracted?

You can get typhoid through Typhoid through

Typhoidyphoid is acquired by consuming food or water tainted with the bacterium Vibrio Typhoide.

Typhoid The risk of contracting Typhoid is higher in regions with poor sanitation and limited access to clean water.

Typhoid The bacteria are commonly found in polluted water sources, such as rivers, wells, or food that has come into contact with contaminated water.

Typhoid After ingestion, Vibrio Typhoide produces a toxin in the intestines, leading to severe diarrhoea and dehydration.

How long will each appointment take?

Each appointment will take around 30 minutes.

The number of doses required for the typhoid vaccine varies depending on the type of vaccine administered:

Oral Vaccine Live Attenuated Vaccine  Ty21a

This vaccine is taken in capsule form and requires a series of four doses, administered every other day over a one week period. Completing the entire course is essential for effective protection.

Injectable Vaccine Inactivated Vaccine  Vi capsular polysaccharide vaccine:

This vaccine is given as a single injection. One dose provides protection, but a booster is recommended every two years if there is ongoing risk of exposure.

The selection of the vaccine type may depend on factors such as age, health status, and travel plans.

Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Disease Burden

The significant reduction in typhoid fever morbidity and mortality in industrialised countries can be attributed to improved living conditions and the widespread use of antibiotics.

However, typhoid fever remains a substantial public health challenge in many developing regions, particularly in the WHO African, Eastern Mediterranean, SouthEast Asia, and Western Pacific Regions.

According to WHO , in 2019, it is estimated that there are approximately 9 million cases of typhoid fever annually, leading to around 110,000 deaths each year.

The risk of contracting typhoid fever is significantly higher in populations that lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities, with children being the most vulnerable to the disease.

FAQs

There are two vaccines available to prevent typhoid fever: one is an inactivated (killed) vaccine, and the other is a live, attenuated (weakened) vaccine. Your healthcare provider can assist you in determining which type of typhoid vaccine is most suitable for you. The inactivated typhoid vaccine is given as an injection (shot).

The CDC recommends the typhoid vaccine, although no countries mandate its use. Typhoid fever occurs globally but is most prevalent in low-income regions and areas with inadequate sanitation, particularly in countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

The oral typhoid vaccine offers protection against typhoid disease comparable to the injectable form. However, the oral vaccine provides at least five years of protection, whereas the injectable vaccine offers immunity for only two years.

Ideally, the typhoid vaccine should be administered at least one month prior to travel. However, it can be given closer to the travel date if necessary. For individuals who remain at risk of infection, booster vaccinations are recommended every three years.

Typhoid fever typically lasts between seven to ten days when treatment begins soon after symptoms appear. If left untreated or if treatment is delayed, the illness can persist for three weeks or longer. In cases with complications or relapses, the recovery period may be extended.

The bacteria travel through the intestines and enter the bloodstream. From there, they spread to various parts of the body, including the lymph nodes, gallbladder, liver, spleen, and other organs. Some individuals may become carriers of *Salmonella Typhi*, continuing to excrete the bacteria in their stools for extended periods, sometimes even years, thus perpetuating the spread of the disease.

As typhoid fever progresses, patients may experience a high fever (103°F or 39.5°C) or higher and severe diarrhoea. Additionally, some individuals may develop a rash known as “rose spots,” which are small red spots appearing on the abdomen and chest.

To avoid typhoid while travelling, get vaccinated and follow safe food and water practices. Ensure good hygiene by washing hands frequently and avoid consuming raw or potentially contaminated food and water.
